Advanced Roadcraft Driving
A blended course of on-road coaching and online e-learning
‘Roadcraft‘ is a handbook that describes a system of driving that forms the foundations for advanced driving as it is taught in the UK, including in the UK’s police and other emergency services. Whilst Roadcraft is handy in developing knowledge and understanding of advanced driving theory, behind-the-wheel education delivered on-road is necessary to develop drivers’ skills.
Our Advanced Roadcraft Driving course is a blend of online e-learning followed by four days of mostly on-road coaching. This course forms the foundation on which our other driving courses are built.
Stephen Carr: “All I can say is that it was better than I thought it could be. Thanks for everything you have taught me…”
On-road and online, this course develops (licensed) drivers’ knowledge, understanding and skill in all environments (urban, rural and motorway). Lessons include:
- ‘the system’ of vehicle control
- the 8 habits of safe drivers, including development of participants’ observations, anticipation and planning
- roadworthiness checks and ‘cockpit’ drill
- vehicle control: steering, accelerating, braking and gear-changing techniques
- cornering: assessment of bends (including limit-point analysis), approach position and cornering lines
- overtaking
- motorway (highway) driving
- manoeuvring
- emergencies and driver aids (ABS, TC and ESC)
- operating electric vehicles.
We believe that professional drivers, including chauffeurs and close protection drivers, should all be competent and confident advanced drivers. In both professional driving occupations and front-line emergency services work, drivers need an understanding of how best to steer clear of accidents in order to meet their duty of care to their passengers and the public. This course provides a route onto some of our other courses, including our Chauffeur Driving and Close Protection Driving courses, and, ultimately, into rewarding careers as professional drivers.
In order to earn either a college certificate of achievement or an accredited qualification, participants will need to successfully complete three assessments of their knowledge, understanding and skill:
- Online quizzes integrated into the e-learning component
- Ongoing assessment of driving competence throughout the 4-day on-road component, integrating commentary driving
- Theoretical examination (comprising multiple-choice questions on the content of Roadcraft).
On this course, there is no final ‘driving test’. We favour ongoing, ‘formative’ assessment of drivers’ skills in contrast to short, summative driving tests.
Most qualifications have a difficulty level. The higher the level, the more challenging the qualification is. This course and the qualifications for which it provides evidence are at (England’s) level 3 (of nine), which is the same as an ‘A level’.
Participants are likely to take around one day to complete the online e-learning component. Subsequently, the on-road component lasts four days. We recommend studying the Roadcraft handbook whilst completing the online component. We do not provide Roadcraft, but it can be purchased on Amazon.
The UK government’s office for qualifications (Ofqual): “TQT is, essentially, an indication of how long a typical learner might take to study a qualification, including the time spent on their individual study and on assessment. It also includes Guided Learning Hours (GLH), which is the time spent actually being taught.”
35 Guided Learning Hours (GLH)
49 hours Total Qualification Time (TQT)
